Three new heritage expositions to discover this fall at the Soulanges Canal Park

Three new heritage expositions to discover this fall at the Soulanges Canal Park

Pointe-des-Cascades, September 30th 2025 – The Soulanges Canal Park is proud to unveil three major heritage enhancement projects. These projects will transport you to the heart of the Soulanges Canal’s history, from yesterday to today. In addition to new physical panels, the Park invites visitors to discover enhanced content on its brand-new interactive platform. It’s the perfect way to discover the most beautiful autumn landscapes the park has to offer!

Archipel multi-sensory stations

The Archipel project, the result of a citizen co-creation process led by the TRAMES organization in 2019-2020, is taking physical shape at the canal with the installation of ten sound and visual interpretation stations. Each station invites visitors to listen to audio vignettes highlighting the relationship between riverside communities and the Soulanges Canal, while offering historical facts and photographic archives. A multi-sensory experience to discover on site or online: msj.world/canalsoulanges/card/fabdb96

The Soulanges Canal (1899-1958): An exhibition revisited

Ten heritage interpretation panels installed since 2005 have been completely revamped to present an enhanced version of the exhibition The Soulanges Canal (1899-1958). Thanks to the meticulous work of the Musée régional de Vaudreuil-Soulanges, the texts have been revised and enriched, and new archival images have been integrated into the project. Now available in digital format: msj.world/canalsoulanges/card/fssmg4a

A new edition of the oriflamme banner exhibition

Twenty-seven new oriflamme banners are displayed on structures marking every kilometer of the bike path between Pointe-des-Cascades and Saint-Zotique. The 2025 exhibition features historic photos of the canal and the region, inviting you to stop and learn more about the panoramas on display. Labels and QR codes are installed on each structure, so you can continue your discovery of the region’s history. Discover the region by bike, on foot or online: msj.world/canalsoulanges/card/drhq49k

About the partners

These three projects were supported by the Quebec government and the Vaudreuil-Soulanges MRC under the cultural development agreement (2021-2023 and 2024), as well as by the “Signature innovation” component of the Fonds régions et ruralité of the Ministère des Affaires municipales et de l’Habitation (MAMH).

The Archipel project also benefited from the Programme d’innovation culturelle et numérique of the Conseil des arts et de la culture de Vaudreuil-Soulanges (CACVS), and the audio vignettes of the initial TRAMES project were supported by the Conseil des arts de Montréal’s Des ponts culturels, d’une rive à l’autre program, and the collaboration of the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, and the municipalities of Pointe-des-Cascades, Les Cèdres, Coteau-du-Lac and Les Coteaux.

The Park would like to thank all the partners who contributed to these achievements, in particular Geneviève Murray, the Collectif Escargo, the Société de recherches historiques de Pointe-des-Cascades, the Musée régional de Vaudreuil-Soulanges and the Centre d’archives de Vaudreuil-Soulanges. Finally, a special thank you to the citizens who lent their voices and their stories to the Archipel project.

Artistic duo SYLLAD simultaneously presents two exhibitions featuring the Soulanges Canal

Coteau-du-Lac, August 6 August 2025

Trees are back at the Canal, exhibition at Soulanges Canal Park

After almost 60 years of loyal service, the Soulanges Canal bowed out in 1958 to make way for the St. Lawrence Seaway.

SYLLAD’s 12 works, placed in situ in 3 museum arches along its route, demonstrate that after all these years of industrial exploitation, the Canal and its surroundings have once again become a natural place for the whole community to enjoy. Its flora and fauna have reclaimed their rights through a few industrial remnants, while offering an immersive environment conducive to artistic and heritage interpretation.

Through the creation of its works, SYLLAD illustrates this state of affairs and bears witness to the transformation of landscapes in favor of nature’s resilience.

The proposed experience goes beyond simple contemplation: it invites visitors to reflect on the relationship between industrial history and ecological resilience. A majority of the works bear the marks of time, as they are inspired by archival images integrated into the surrounding current landscape, reinforcing the link between art and place.

Rather than a purely informative discourse, the art acts as an emotional medium, encouraging visitors to reflect on and experience the place in an intuitive, multi-sensory way.

The presentation of the exhibition is made possible thanks to the Conseil des arts et lettres du Québec’s Présentation d’œuvres dans l’espace public ou dans des lieux atypiques program, which aims to support artistic projects conceived specifically for the places where they will be presented, works in situ, or productions designed for presentation in venues that are unusual for the discipline or the public.

The exhibition Les arbres sont de retour au Canal (Trees are back on the Canal) is installed along the Soulanges Canal at the following locations until November 5, 2025:

  1. KM0 bike path, Pointe-des-Cascades
  2. Downtown Coteau-du-Lac, near the intersection with rue Principale
  3. At the western mouth of the canal, near the pedestrian bridge
Les arbres sont de retour au Canal – les coulisses, exhibition at the CACVS gallery

To complement the exhibition on the banks of the Soulanges canal, SYLLAD offers you a behind-the-scenes look at the project at the CACVS gallery.

Come and discover the creative process behind this project, which includes archival image research, photographic scouting along the canal, illustration tests, the process of selecting the final works, and some previously unpublished works…

Les arbres sont de retour au Canal, les coulisses exhibition will be on display at the CACVS gallery until November 5, 2025, during MRC de Vaudreuil-Soulanges opening hours: Monday to Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Friday, 8:30 a.m. to noon.

About SYLLAD

SYLLAD is an artistic duo formed by visual artist Sylvie Rochette and artist-photographer Ladislas Kadyszewski. After many years of practice in their respective fields, they chose to work together because of the complementarity of their practices, values and sensibilities, as well as their interest in tackling themes that question our presence in the world. The tree becomes the central symbol of this multidisciplinary approach.

SYLLAD warmly thanks the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec for their financial support, as well as Bloom’s Urban Exhibition Furnishings, the Parc du canal de Soulanges, the Conseil des arts et de la culture de Vaudreuil-Soulanges, the Société d’histoire de Coteau-du-Lac, the Société de recherches historiques de Pointe-des-Cascades, the Musée régional de Vaudreuil-Soulanges and the Centre d’archives de Vaudreuil-Soulanges for their invaluable collaboration. Many thanks to all!

In collaboration with the Municipalité des Coteaux and the Ville de Coteau-du-Lac, L’Embouchure takes place at the Thomas-Monro and Louis Stanislas-Pariseau parks for the summer season. With shows, family days, watercraft, local products and much more, this is the perfect place to enjoy summer! Buoyed by the success of its previous editions, L’Embouchure continues to take root in the region’s cultural and recreational landscape with its fifth season.

L’Embouchure’s facilities offer breathtaking views of the canal and Lake Saint-François, making it the perfect place to get together with friends and enjoy the warm weather. New this year, Parc du canal de Soulanges takes over the paddling kiosk with an enhanced offer for outdoor enthusiasts and paddle sports enthusiasts: kayak rentals, services and advice for paddlers on excursions, loan of sports equipment and lawn games for all ages.

Musical programming

Once again this year, free shows are presented on Friday and Saturday evenings, with live performances to suit all tastes. Local artists, emerging groups and new discoveries will punctuate the summer evenings, thanks to financial support from Desjardins Vaudreuil-Soulanges. Programming is orchestrated by Groupe Charlebois, site manager. Details of the calendar can be found at www.lembouchure.ca.

A summer punctuated by the Nautical Festival

This year, the Festival nautique de Coteau-du-Lac et Les Coteaux will offer an enhanced, three-day version, from July 18 to 20, 2025. It kicks off on Friday evening with a colorful performance by Pulsation Productions, followed by two days of on-the-water entertainment, shows and family activities.

The Soulanges Canal Park would like to acknowledge the invaluable financial contribution of the Regional County Municipality (RCM) of Vaudreuil-Soulanges and the Ministère des Affaires municipales et de l’Habitation, as part of the RCM “Signature innovation” projects component of the Fonds régions et ruralité.

“I’m delighted that our government is supporting the Vaudreuil-Soulanges MRC in the deployment of this symbolic site, which is back for summer 2025. Soulanges Canal rental kiosks season opens

Soulanges Canal rental kiosks season opens

Coteau-du-Lac, June 18, 2025 – Parc du canal de Soulanges is pleased to announce the opening of the 2025 season for its equipment rental kiosk in downtown Coteau-du-Lac, as well as the inauguration of its new rental center in L’Embouchure.

The Soulanges Canal is a popular destination for paddle sports enthusiasts, who can discover its rich historical and landscape heritage in a whole new way! With calm water and no motorized navigation, the Soulanges Canal is perfect for beginner paddlers or those looking for a safe, contemplative or sporty experience.

In 2025, the equipment fleet offers several new features. Visitors can rent bicycles (hybrid or electric) and explore the 35 km bike path linking Pointe-des-Cascades to Rivière-Beaudette. This cycle-touring route passes through a variety of natural and heritage landscapes, punctuated by rest areas and heritage interpretation stops. A great opportunity to take your time, get away from it all and experience Soulanges Canal Park to the full.

In terms of water sports activities, the Route Bleue du Parc du canal de Soulanges has been enriched by the addition of new public docks, installed in collaboration with riverside municipalities. These new access points make it easier to explore the canal’s various basins, each offering its own unique character and ambience. By summer 2025, after several years’ work, these additions will make it possible to decompartmentalize the paddlesports basins over a distance of nearly 17 kilometers. The location of the docks is available via the interactive map on the Soulanges Canal Park website.

“The Government of Canada invests in the tourism industry by supporting regional organizations like Soulanges Canal Park. They showcase unique experiences that enable tourists to appreciate Quebec, its hospitality, culture, history and the beauty of its natural landscapes. The development of the cycling tourism offer in this outdoor and cultural heritage site is excellent news for the entire region,” declared the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions (DEC).

The MRCVS adopts the Cultural and Landscape Master Plan for Soulanges Canal Park

The MRCVS adopts the Cultural and Landscape Master Plan for Soulanges Canal Park

A visionary plan born of an innovative competition

This master plan is the result of a competition launched in January 2021 by the MRC de Vaudreuil-Soulanges and the Ministère de la Culture et des Communications. The aim of the competition was to design a vision for the canal’s enhancement that would be anchored in the community and supported by the local population. After a rigorous two-stage process and the examination of numerous proposals by an eight-member jury chaired by Philippe Lupien, professor at UQAM’s School of Design, the Passagers project was chosen. This innovative proposal was conceived by the Collectif Escargo team, in collaboration with the firm Rousseau Lefebvre and Geneviève Murray, museologist and cultural project management consultant.

Passagers : a journey through 23 kilometers of unique experiences

The winning concept revolves around the theme of travel. Passagers offers a 23-kilometer route dotted with discoveries and experiences that invite visitors to return. Each stop becomes an adventure, offering the opportunity to learn an unusual fact, take a fresh look at nature or take part in a captivating collective event. A short video lets you experience the journey proposed by the winner:

A coherent, ambitious vision

The vision developed by the Vaudreuil-Soulanges MRC is based on three fundamental principles:
– Ambition to create a bold regional signature project
– Coherence to unify the entire canal
– Identity by creating an image specific to the region

The adopted master plan is a comprehensive document that structures the project around five major themes:

– Accessibility, physical links and reception infrastructures
– Recreational activities
– Protection of water and natural environments
– Art, culture, heritage and archaeology
– Urban integration
This document is an invaluable reference tool, both to guide current interventions and to guide the development of the Soulanges Canal over a 30-year horizon. It presents an overall vision through inspiring images and concrete guides on signage, preferred materials, color palettes, lighting, street furniture and vegetation.
A summary of the master plan as well as a video from the public consultations are available by following these links.

A new era for the Soulanges Canal

“The adoption of this plan represents a crucial step in the enhancement of our regional signature project. It is a tool that proposes an ambitious vision for the Soulanges Canal, to make it a dynamic place that supports our collective identity while offering inspiring experiences to visitors and residents alike”, said Patrick Bousez, Prefect of the MRC de Vaudreuil-Soulanges and Mayor of Rivière-Beaudette.
“This plan is the fruit of several years of reflection, collaboration and mobilization. It reflects a shared vision that will guide our actions now and for decades to come. It’s a solid foundation on which we can continue, together, to make the Soulanges Canal a significant and meaningful place for our region,” emphasizes Marianne Sigouin-Lebel, General Manager of the Parc du canal de Soulanges.
The adoption of this master plan will enable the MRC and Parc du canal de Soulanges to develop an implementation strategy, prioritizing actions based on comments received during public consultations. This master plan will serve as a reference tool to support funding applications and implement the action plan for the coming years. The MRC and Park invite citizens to take ownership of this vision and follow the next steps in its implementation, which will be initiated over the coming months.

New Oriflamme Banner Exhibit

May 3, 2025

As of this week, a brand-new outdoor exhibit is coming to life along the Soulanges Canal bike path! A total of 27 oriflamme banners have been installed between Pointe-des-Cascades and St-Zotique to take cyclists and walkers on a journey through the fascinating history of the canal – from its daring construction to its glory years as a commercial waterway.

Each banner presents a section of this great human, technical and territorial adventure. The entire exhibition forms a linear, open-air trail, freely accessible and designed to enrich the experience of park users.

New for 2025: an interactive exhibition!

This year also marks a turning point for the exhibition: it becomes interactive!
Thanks to an all-new digital platform, visitors can now scan a QR code at each banner to access a full version of the image, plus facts and anecdotes related to the image and banner location.

It’s a fun, modern way to learn more about local heritage, right on the spot, along the way. The platform also allows you to consult the complete exhibition from home, on your cell phone or computer.
For full details, visit the heritage page of the website, or visit the exhibition directly here: https: //msj.world/canalsoulanges/card/lfhs8qr

A collective and promising project

This exhibition project is the fruit of a sustained collaboration between several passionate partners. It was made possible thanks to the support of the Ministère de la Culture et des Communications and the MRC de Vaudreuil-Soulanges (MRCVS ), through the cultural development agreement (2024). We wish to emphasize that the Canal Park’s financial and technical participation in this project is part of the MRCVSs “Signature innovation” project, supported by the Ministère des Affaires municipales et de l’Habitation (MAMH) as part of the Fonds régions et ruralité.

We also acknowledge the invaluable contribution of the Musée régional de Vaudreuil-Soulanges, the Centre d’archives de Vaudreuil-Soulanges, as well as numerous local collaborators involved in historical research, content creation and field implementation.

Discover it all summer long!

The exhibition is accessible now, and will remain in place throughout the summer season until the trail closes in the fall. Whether you’re a history buff, a nature lover or just passing through, this initiative is sure to capture your attention and enrich your stroll.

Entente de développement culturel renewed for 2025 – 2027

Vaudreuil-Dorion, April 17, 2025 – The Vaudreuil-Soulanges MRC is pleased to announce that it has received a grant totalling $194,281 from the Quebec government, as part of the Ententes de développement culturel municipales et régionales 2025-2027 program. Through this agreement, the MRC is committed to funding 50% of the selected projects, representing financial support of $194,281, for a total of $388,562 in cultural development investments for our region.

The MRC is proud of this regional partnership, which enables us to support large-scale, structuring projects carried out by regional organizations in our territory. This is also an opportunity for the MRC, in collaboration with the Conseil des arts et de la culture de Vaudreuil-Soulanges, to begin a process of renewing its Regional Cultural Policy adopted in 2015. This will be an opportunity to update the portrait of the regional situation in order to redefine our priorities and areas of intervention for the coming years. A consultation process at various levels is planned with cultural, municipal and civil society players. “says Patrick Bousez, MRC Prefect and Mayor of Rivière-Beaudette.

Promising projects for the Conseil des arts et de la culture de Vaudreuil-Soulanges (CACVS)

This new agreement will see the production of video vignettes on the impact of the national policy of integrating the arts into architecture and the environment in the Vaudreuil-Soulanges region, past, present and future. Also, in partnership with the future Hôpital Vaudreuil-Soulanges (CISSSMO) and the Musée régional de Vaudreuil-Soulanges, the CACVS will produce an immersive, regional (travelling) exhibition on the benefits of art. Lastly, part of the amount allocated will be used for a feasibility study on networking regional cultural venues, combined with a regional programming pilot project.

The Entente de développement culturel is an essential subsidy for the deployment of cultural projects on our territory. It is a major financial lever for our organization. In addition, we are delighted to have been entrusted by the MRC to lead the process of revising the regional cultural policy. This vast undertaking will enable us to re-express a common, shared vision of culture in the region, and to highlight the assets and opportunities available to the community and to artists. “says Nadine Maltais, General Manager of the Conseil des arts et de la culture de Vaudreuil-Soulanges.

New cultural and heritage projects for Soulanges Canal Park

This agreement will also enable the Canal Park to carry out two in situ heritage interpretation initiatives , combining outdoor activities with the dissemination of the site’s history, both on land and on water. The grant will also enhance interaction between visitors and local artists in the various hubs of the regional park. Finally, part of the contribution will be devoted to developing a concept for cultural dissemination and heritage interpretation as part of the redevelopment of the Petit pouvoir des Cèdres, a major project supported by the Park and its partners, destined to be defined and accelerated over the next few years.

The Entente de développement culturel is an important lever for Soulanges Canal Park. It enables us to place the arts and heritage at the heart of our actions, and to democratize access to culture for both the local population and our visitors. We are fortunate to be able to work with the region’s driving forces to implement these projects, which we strongly believe will improve the region’s quality of life. We would like to thank the Ministère de la Culture et des Communications and the MRC Vaudreuil-Soulanges for their trust and support. “adds Marianne Sigouin-Lebel, General Manager of Soulanges Canal Park.

About Local and Regional Cultural Development Agreements

Cultural Development Agreements (CDAs) offer the Ministère de la Culture et des Communications (MCCQ) and local and regional municipalities the opportunity to share their territorial expertise and coordinate their cultural and communications initiatives. Their aim is to foster the development and cultural vitality of territories, within the framework of a flexible and collaborative partnership, for the benefit of citizens, while maintaining a sustainable development perspective.

The EDC is a tool designed to respond to the specific realities and needs that local municipalities and regional county municipalities, as governments of proximity, are well placed to identify. These agreements represent a lever for the development and reinforcement of cultural initiatives in which partners from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to participate.
