Inauguration of a new placottoir in the park

September 29, 2023

The Soulanges Canal Park and its partners inaugurate a brand-new placottoir-style public space

The Soulanges Canal Park and its many partners gathered last night to celebrate the inauguration of a brand-new public space in the Soulanges Canal Park, at the entrance to the Village des Écluses.

Following a call for applications, Valérie Langlais and Adèle Reeves were selected to work with artist Sonia Haberstich, who assumed artistic direction of the project. The artists were selected on the basis of their complementarity and their sensitivity to the themes of community, heritage and the environment. During the summer of 2023, the space was created “outside the walls”, before the eyes of the public, who were invited to talk with the artists and take part in creative workshops on Saturdays. The project was funded as part of the 2021-2023 ’Entente en développement culturel 2021-2023 between the MRC de Vaudreuil-Soulanges and the gouvernement du Québec whose objective is to support the development and cultural vitality of territories. The Soulanges Canal Park also thanks the Conseil des arts et de la culture de Vaudreuil-Soulanges (CACVS) for its support and expertise in implementing this project.

The space thus created is composed of two tables made from industrial coils produced by the CSUR Cooperative in collaboration with wood worker Hugo Sabourin, a tiered space designed by Construction Hutchinson, and a series of unique sculptures created by the artists using a variety of techniques and arranged in the space to make it more welcoming and to allow each artist to tell his or her own story. This brand-new gathering place will evolve over the coming years, and will be complemented by new, evolving facilities.

The chosen location is no coincidence: the meeting space is right in front of the new Soulanges Canal Park offices, to be built in 2023 thanks to a contribution from the Chambre de commerce et d’industrie de Vaudreuil-Soulanges (CCIVS) via the Fédération des chambres de commerce du Québec’s assistance program for small tourism enterprises (PAPETU). The inauguration of the Placottoir was also an opportunity to highlight this contribution.

The inauguration also included an art workshop offered by the artists who contributed to the project. It also marks the kick-off to a program of artistic workshops, which will take place at the placottoir in autumn 2023 and spring 2024. Here is the program that was announced, again thanks to the contribution of the Ministère de la Culture et des Communications:

Autumn 2023

About the placottoir artists

Sonia Haberstich

Sonia Haberstich lives and maintains her practice in Hudson, Quebec. She obtained a Master’s degree in painting from Concordia University in 2008. She has participated in numerous major exhibitions in Canada and abroad. She has also been the recipient of several grants, notably from SODEC and CALQ, and has created several public works, some of which were selected as part of the 1% architectural integration program. Sonia Haberstich contributes to her community by being very active in teaching and cultural mediation in the Montérégie region.

Valérie Langlais

Valérie Langlais lives in Les Cèdres and teaches art at the secondary level. As an artist, her multidisciplinary work bears witness to her versatility and mastery of plastic language and different creative materials. All his work is inspired by nature, and his use of textures and organic elements reflects his concern for the environment.

Adèle Reeves

Adele Reeves is an artist who works with the mediums of image, movement and place. She’s also a nature lover, educator, activist and eternal student. In recent years, his work has focused on questions of the connection between nature and community, and on climate mourning. It reminds people of the active role they play in nature, not just that of living close to it. Her work is cross-disciplinary, combining painting, sculpture, animation, site intervention, dance, activism and teaching.

Appel aux artistes

A call to artists for the creation of an artistic placottoir at the canal!

February 14, 2023

A call to artists for the creation of an artistic placottoir at the canal!

The Soulanges Canal is a heritage site of great importance for the Vaudreuil-Soulanges region. It is also a gathering place for our citizens, where the identity of the place is intimately linked to family histories, childhood, or the landscape of a welcoming land for our new residents. For artists, the Soulanges Canal can be a place of inspiration, creation and diffusion. Such is the ambition of the Parc du canal de Soulanges, which places culture and the arts at the heart of its mission.

Context and project | Parc du canal de Soulanges is currently calling on artistic collectives (existing or spontaneous) or individual artists (in visual arts or multidisciplinary) to submit an application for the collective construction of a placottoir-type stop in the Soulanges Canal Park. The concept includes public participation in the creation phase, notably through citizen workshops and outdoor creation. These workshops, held over a period of 4 to 6 weeks, should solicit the spontaneous participation of site visitors and/or the transfer of knowledge from the artist to the visitor.

The artistic direction and coordination of the project is assured by the artist Sonia Haberstich, who will be joined by 2 or 3 other artists, selected on an individual basis or as a collective.

The project will be located at the entrance of the Village des Écluses, just in front of the new Parc du canal de Soulanges office, at 2 Chemin du Canal, Pointe-des-Cascades.

The project is made possible thanks to the support of the ministère de la Culture et des Communications du Québec and the MRC of Vaudreuil-Soulanges within the framework of the Entente en développement culturel 2021-2023. We would also like to thank the ministère des Affaires Municipales et de l’Habitation for their support of the Parc du canal de Soulanges’ 2023 operations.

The complete call for applications (french only) is available by following THIS LINK.

Send your complete file(documents assembled in a single pdf document) by email to Marianne Sigouin-Lebel, Executive Director of the Parc du canal de Soulanges(direction@canaldesoulanges.ca), no later than Sunday, March 19, 2023 at 11:59 p.m.

Cycle Polymère Parc nature oeuvre culture canal

Polymer cycle, by Philippe Corriveau, inaugurated in the Nature Park!

December 1, 2022

The Cycle Polymer Work, by Philippe Corriveau, inaugurated in the Nature Park!

A new work, Le Cycle Polymère, created by artist Philippe Corriveau, now stands in the Pointe-des-Cascades nature park. Peter Zytynsky, Mayor of Pointe-des-Cacades, accompanied by Isabelle Poirier, Assistant Director General and Martin Champagne, Coordinator of Sports, Recreation, Culture and Community Life for the municipality were present. Marianne Sigouin-Lebel, Executive Director of the Soulanges Canal Park, Julie Lemieux, President of the CACVS and Daphnée Lecours-Tessier, representative of the Haut Saint-Laurent ZIP Committee were also on hand with artist Philippe Corriveau. The purpose of this work of art is to raise awareness of the impact of plastic on the local wildlife of the St. Lawrence.

The Upper St. Lawrence ZIP Committee would like to thank the St. Lawrence Action Fund (SLF), through the St. Lawrence Marine Biodiversity Program, in collaboration with Advantage St. Lawrence, the new maritime vision of the Quebec government. The project was also made possible by a contribution from the Community Interaction Program, linked to the St. Lawrence Action Plan 2021-2026 and implemented by the governments of Canada and Quebec, as well as the municipality of Pointe-des-Cascades. The Upper St. Lawrence ZIP Committee thanks the Conseil des arts et de la culture de Vaudreuil-Soulanges for its financial support and coaching services.

The origin of the project | In the fall of 2021, the Upper St. Lawrence ZIP Committee held a clean-up day at the Pointe-des-Cascades nature park. “In one day alone, more than 500 kg of garbage was removed from the banks of the St. Lawrence River. This beautiful result was possible thanks to more than a dozen people who came to contribute to the cleanup, explained the project coordinator and biologist Daphnée Lecours Tessier.

Following this chore, some of the plastic waste was given to the artist to integrate into this work of art. The work in Pointe-des-Cascades is part of the triptych in the making, The Polymer Cycle, created following the various cleanups in 2021 organized by the Upper St. Lawrence ZIP Committee. In fact, one work is installed in Notre-Dame-de-l’Île-Perrot, another in Les Coteaux and one in Pointe-des-Cascades. The Great Blue Heron, installed in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, is also part of the circuit of works.

Soulanges Canal Park selected as a Signature Project for the MRCVS

The financial participation of the MAMH will allow, among other things, to support the creation of the Soulanges Canal Park organization, the improvement of recreational facilities as well as the implementation of new activities and infrastructures along the canal and the Soulanges bicycle path. These actions will be guided by the first-ever Plan d’aménagement culturel et paysager du Parc du canal de Soulanges, which will be delivered in the summer of 2022, following an architectural competition conducted in collaboration with the Ministère de la Culture et des Communications du Québec in 2021. Under the name Passengersthe plan and the projects that will result from it promise visitors and citizens a memorable experience based on the enhancement of industrial, architectural, ecological and landscape heritage.

“This is great news! I am very pleased that MAMH’s financial contribution can help the Soulanges Canal Park. This is a wonderful and historic enhancement to the revitalization of the canal area. After all these years, this is a great moment for our region. Finally, this heritage site is managed by and for our community. The Soulanges Canal is an absolutely beautiful place with great potential for development. This announcement is particularly heartwarming because this park will be part of our regional jewel and an enrichment as I have always wished” declares Mrs. Marilyne Picard, députée de Soulanges, adjointe parlementaire du ministre de la Santé et des Services sociaux.

With 120 years of history, a territory covering more than 100 hectares and a unique heritage, the Soulanges Canal Park is a regional development pole for recreation and tourism in the making,” said Patrick Bousez, prefect of the MRC and mayor of Rivière-Beaudette.

“We are very happy that the Soulanges Canal Park can finally take off! After several years of preparation, the participation of the MAMH and the MRC, as well as the support of the community, allow us to officially launch the project. Site des Atelier Village des Écluses

Les Ateliers de Pointe-des-Cascades becomes the Village des Écluses

September 30, 2021

Les Ateliers de Pointe-des-Cascades becomes the Village des Écluses

The Site des Ateliers, will be reborn thanks to an agreement between the Municipalité de Pointe-des-Cascades, the new non-for-profit operator named Rendez-Vous and Développement Vaudreuil-Soulanges (DEV). A much-awaited moment in Vaudreuil-Soulanges, the partners are happy to be able to materialize the return of this jewel on the tourist and cultural scene of the region.

Negotiations that bore fruit

It took several months to reach an agreement that suited all parties and the reality of the site. The investments to be made in the coming years, the presence of seasonal campers on the site and the integration of the whole into the Parc du canal de Soulanges are all subjects that had to be considered in drawing up the agreement. Lasting five years, this will allow the promoter group, Rendez-Vous, to breathe new life into the resort offer and to set up a cultural, food and commercial program on the riverside portion of the site.

The municipality remains the owner of the place, while DEV plays the role of support in the strategy and the marketing of the new offer. All in close relation with the Parc du canal de Soulanges and its future cultural and landscape development plan. A unifying project, around which the participants feel mobilized and optimistic. The mayor, Mr. Pierre Lalonde, says he is delighted with the signing of the agreement and the arrival of this project on the territory of Pointe-des-Cascades: “After several years of working to revitalize this historic site, I am proud to see the project take shape and materialize. By signing this agreement, we are improving our municipality’s recreational tourism offer, which will be beneficial both for our citizens and for the Vaudreuil-Soulanges region”.

Joanne Brunet, general manager at DEV, agrees. “We have worked hard since its closure in 2019 to find the right developer and the right project for this majestic site. This heritage building complex is of prime importance for the Parc du canal de Soulanges, it was essential to work with a promoter whose orientations correspond to the regional vision for this site. I believe that we can say mission accomplished, ”emphasizes Ms. Brunet.

About Rendez-Vous and its project

Rendez-Vous was born from a group of professionals recognized in the creation and management of community and cultural places of life. “We are lovers of culture, heritage and nature, and we all fell in love with this site which brings together all our passions. We have made it our mission to revive it and make it a unique cultural and resort area in Quebec, a living environment that will bring together both the community and the people who camp there. », Underlines Jérôme Glad, one of the founders of the organization.

The Village des Écluses will fully open its doors for the 2022 season, with the development of the leisure offer, the reopening of the restaurant and its terrace, the improvement of public facilities and the organization of a series of public cultural events.

A launch event will take place on Saturday October 9, 2021 ; an ideal opportunity to see the site come back to life and learn more about the vision of this new project.

The MRC de Vaudreuil-Soulanges presents the new vision of the Soulanges canal

September 15, 2021

The MRC de Vaudreuil-Soulanges presents its new vision for the Soulanges canal

The Vaudreuil-Soulanges MRC brought together its partners and media representatives to present the new vision of the Soulanges canal. This announcement marks the launch of the new era surrounding the Soulanges canal. Indeed, during the press conference, the MRC underlined the agreement it signed with the Ministère des Transports du Québec (MTQ) which allows it to set up the parc régional du canal de Soulanges and announced the winner of the project competition for the cultural and landscaping of the Canal-de-Soulanges park. With these announcements, we are truly witnessing a reappropriation of the Soulanges canal by the community.

To guide its work in recent years, the MRC de Vaudreuil-Soulanges has adopted the following guiding parameters:

  • The park must be accessible to all;
  • The canal must first serve the Vaudreuil-Soulangeois;
  • The canal must become a living and unifying place, synonymous with pride for the region;
  • The canal must move from a passive stage into a dynamic space for the community;
  • The regional park and its surroundings must constitute a space with high recreational and tourist potential;
  • It is essential to maintain the navigability parameters of the Soulanges canal.

« Avec les annonces d’aujourd’hui, le canal de Soulanges entre réellement dans une nouvelle ère. La région se réapproprie enfin son plus grand joyau patrimonial pour le transformer en un lieu dynamique et vivant pour tous les citoyens de Vaudreuil-Soulanges. La mise en valeur prendra certainement plusieurs années, mais nous sommes aujourd’hui au premier jour de celle-ci » said Patrick Bousez, prefect of the MRC de Vaudreuil-Soulanges and mayor of the municipality of Rivière-Beaudette.

Signature of the agreement with the Ministère des Transports du Québec

The MRC de Vaudreuil-Soulanges, the Ministère des Transports du Québec as well as the municipalities of Pointe-des-Cascades, Les Cèdres, Coteau-du-Lac and Les Coteaux have signed agreements that officially allow the transformation of the Soulanges canal and its surrounding areas in a regional park. This mainly administrative gesture therefore allows the MRC de Vaudreuil-Soulanges and its municipalities to carry out more actions around the Soulanges canal. It was following this agreement that it was possible to set up the parc régional du canal de Soulanges.

During the election campaign in 2018, I put all my heart on the table by saying this; « Je vais tout faire pour que le canal soit accessible aux activités touristiques et récréatives ». Thanks to the mobilization of the community, today after more than 40 years, our government has taken an important and significant step by signing the management agreement for the development of the Soulanges canal with the MRC de Vaudreuil-Soulanges. Je suis très fière de participer au développement et l’épanouissement d’un joyau qui contribue à notre enrichissement sportif, culturel et touristique dans la magnifique région de Soulanges », underlined Ms. Marilyne Picard, Member of Parliament for Soulanges.

The creation of the Société de gestion du canal de Soulanges

In order to ensure the day-to-day management of the new Soulanges Canal Regional Park, the MRC has set up the Société de gestion du canal de Soulanges, which is a non-profit organization. This is how it will ensure the management of operations such as, maintenance of works and grounds, supervision and organization of events, application of park regulations and that it will develop and implement implements the park’s master plan.

The board is made up of the general managers of the four municipalities crossed by the canal in addition to having representatives from the cultural, tourist and river sectors. Ms. Marianne Sigouin-Lebel from Développement Vaudreuil-Soulanges is the director.

The winner of the project competition for the cultural and landscaping of the Canal-de-Soulanges park

In January 2021, the MRC de Vaudreuil-Soulanges and the Ministry of Culture and Communications launched the Project competition for the cultural and landscaping of the Canal-de-Soulanges park in order to design a vision of enhancement anchored in the environment and carried by the population. Accompanied by Ms. Isabelle Giasson, from the firm EVOQ Architecture, the competition, which was held in two stages, made it possible to receive many interesting proposals to establish a clear vision for the enhancement of the canal. After deliberations by the jury of the competition composed of eight members and chaired by Mr. Philippe Lupien, professor at the design school of UQAM, it is the team made up of the firm Collectif Escargo in collaboration with the firm Rousseau Lefebvre and of Ms. Geneviève Murray, museologist and consultant in cultural project management, who won the competition with her proposal Passagers .

Based on the theme of the trip, Passagers is a course strewn with surprises over 23 kilometers, which prompts you to come back. Each stopover becomes an adventure, a precious moment, an opportunity to learn an unusual fact, to see nature differently or to experience an amazing collective event. « Les membres du jury et l’équipe lauréate ont fait un excellent travail. Ils ont réussi à illustrer notre vision du canal de Soulanges et à soumettre une proposition qui nous fait rêver au canal de demain », underlined Mr. Raymond Larouche, president of the Table du canal de Soulanges at the MRC de Vaudreuil-Soulanges and mayor of the Municipality of Les Cèdres.

Soulanges cycling path: the season is off to a good start!

The arrival of May also marks the start of the cycling season on the Soulanges cycling path. For this occasion, the cycle path is getting a makeover and presents a brand new photographic exhibition.

A brand new citizen exhibition on the banners of the cycling path

Launched in 2020, the Soulanges cycling path banner renewal project has taken a new step with the recent installation of new exposition. The banners extend from the entrance to the bike path in Pointe-des-Cascades to Saint-Zotique, at the rate of one banner per kilometer, for a total of 54 photographic works presented. This project is supported by Développement Vaudreuil-Soulanges and the Conseil des arts et de la culture de Vaudreuil-Soulanges, in collaboration with the Soulanges cycling path committee and that it is funded by the MRC de Vaudreuil-Soulanges and the Quebec Ministry of Culture and Communications. The project allowed 11 residents of Vaudreuil-Soulanges to share their vision of our region, while refining their photographic and artistic technique. They benefited from the professional support of artist curator Caroline Hayeur.

In the coming weeks, the partners will unveil exhibition panels, presenting the photographers as well as the complete collection of photos, in Pointe-des-Cascades. A sign summarizing the project will also be installed in Rivière-Beaudette.

The partners wish to congratulate the participants Samuel Angers, Caroline Campeau, Philippe Chevalier, Patricia Chousa, Caroline Forget, Claire Gervais, Alain Lajoie, Valérie Langlais, Nancy Lépine, Natacha Marleau and Stéphanie Toulouse for their contribution to this citizen project.

Sanitary facilities

Since the official opening on May 1st the sanitary facilities (toilets) of Pointe-des-Cascades, Les Cèdres, Coteau-du-Lac, Les Coteaux, Saint-Zotique and Rivière-Beaudette have been open seven days a week and cleaned on on a daily basis. Get informed before you go to the path, as the situation may change at any time.

Call for projects for the animation of the western mouth – summer 2021

March 23, 2021

Call for projects for the animation of the western mouth of the Soulanges canal – summer 2021

Stretching over 23.5 km, the Soulanges canal has had a major impact on the socio-economic development of the Vaudreuil-Soulanges region. Today, it represents, for the some 150,000 residents of the region (including 13,000 in the municipalities directly affected by this call for projects), a prominent heritage, cultural and outdoor space. The western mouth of the Soulanges canal is an area that is considered to have high recreational tourism potential given its location and the characteristics of the land that makes it up. The site is shared between two municipalities, in large part by the Thomas-Monro and Louis-Stanislas-Pariseau parks, totaling approximately 20,000 square meters. Although belonging to two separate municipalities, these two parks are contiguous. Located near a village center, at the crossroads of the Soulanges cycle path (200,000 passages in front of the meters in 2020) forming part of the Route verte, they constitute a window on Lake Saint-François (Saint-Laurent river) and are currently little exploited. In addition, many boaters navigate the waters of Lake Saint-François and the western mouth sector is a privileged place for anchoring.

The municipalities of Coteau-du-Lac and Les Coteaux as well as DEV would like to join forces with private projects to animate and enhance the site of the western mouth of the canal for the 2021 season in a collective and original formula.

Investments from regional partners are planned for 2021, in particular:

  • Concerts, events and / or cultural services;
  • Docking of a shuttle for thematic cruises (subject to authorization to set up a dock);
  • Free yoga sessions on Saturday mornings as part of Zen Saturdays at the Canal;
  • Site development by adding furniture and recreational items;

Regional organizations and businesses are invited to submit projects to animate and enhance the site this summer. The projects sought may be exclusively commercial (catering or other support service for the tourist industry), nautical, cultural, event or even combine different spheres of activity in order to create synergy.

Cyprienne, Musée régional’s little mouse, visits the canal!

December 2nd, 2020

Cyprienne visits the canal!

Have you met Cyprienne the Mouse? She’s the cultural ambassador of the Vaudreuil-Soulanges Regional Museum, the mini leader of education services for the museum’s school programs. This busy mouse is also part of shop local campaigns all over the region of Vaudreuil-Soulanges. Hero of 11 youth literature albums, Cyprienne stars in yet another adventure, launched just in time for the holidays. Guess where this latest adventure takes place? The old power dam in Les Cèdres! We thought this was a great time to introduce you to Cyprienne and the artists behind this charming project.

A Tiny History of Cyprienne the Mouse

The first volume of Cyprienne’s tales, Les aventures de Cyprienne, was released in 2010. Since her first adventure, Cyprienne has had a very special power: she can travel through time just by touching objects in the museum’s collection. The possibilities are endless! Cyprienne is on a mission to use her time traveling abilities to uncover the past, taking her young readers on imaginative and educational journeys through history.

Chantal Séguin, author

Visual arts curator and director of education services for the Vaudreuil-Soulanges Regional Museum, Chantal Séguin has played a vital role in the region’s cultural landscape for the past 20 years. While she has a particular affection for our beautiful region and its history, Chantal also loves the French language and its rich vocabulary, using its intricacies to share her passions through writing.

Johanne Mitchell, illustrator

A talented designer, Johanne Mitchell develops a variety of promotional materials for the museum. From early on, she was fascinated by illustrations for children, leading her to study children’s literature. After dabbling in watercolors, Johanne returned to the media of her youth, crayons.

You can find Cyprienne stories at Éditions Vaudreuil in Vaudreuil-Dorion, at hairsalon Myrage in Rigaud, at the Marché écolocal (Les Coteaux) or on their website ecolocal.csur.ca… or directly at the museum!

The Pointe-des-Cascades Lighthouse looks good as new

November 17th, 2020

The Pointe-des-Cascades Lighthouse looks good as new

If you visited St. Pierre Park in the heart of Pointe-des-Cascades at the beginning of November, did you notice a major landmark was missing? The village’s famous lighthouse went in for a few weeks of rest and restoration to return it to its former glory! The 50-foot structure, built in 1904 and moved to St. Pierre Park, was unassembled, moved and restored before returning home on November 12. The restoration project was the work of Entreprises LD Raby inc. in Saint-Polycarpe. According to the company, the biggest challenges during this project were the transportation of the lighthouse as well as the work required on site. The lighthouse is back and better than ever; all the rust holes were repaired, its stairs were reinforced and it was repainted according to Ministère des Transports du Québec (MTQ) guidelines.

You can immediately see that the restoration did a lot of good for the century-old lighthouse. Thanks to the municipality for leading the initiative and to all those who collaborated to make this project a success. Thanks to the municipality for leading the initiative and to all those who collaborated to make this project a success.

The Pointe-des-Cascades Historical Research Society was rewarded for their enormous efforts on the new phase of the town’s Parc des ancres. The park pays homage to the maritime history of the region, and recently underwent an incredible transformation during a long-term project that concluded this year. Included in the work was the renewal of the main plaza and the installation of around 50 interpretive panels. Bravo to the whole team for this amazing project.

You can find a complete description of the Parc des ancres on our Heritage page.

Sébastien Borduas merges visual art and heritage

The second 2020 Prize was given to visual artist Sébastien Borduas for Passage, a work of art unveiled this fall at the Les Cèdres municipal dock. The work, made possible with financing from the Fonds d’appui au rayonnement régional (FARR) offered by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, promotes the Les Cèdres identity as well as the town’s history. Making this work of art truly special is how it was conceived with the environment in mind, so that it is perfectly integrated into the landscape- it is almost as if it has always been there! The project was also recognized by the judges as an important contribution to the enrichment of Les Cèdres’ local cultural scene. Congratulations to Sébastien Borduas for this magnificent piece of art!

You can see a complete description of the project on our site’s Public Art section.
